Differential Astrometry of Sub-arcsecond Scale Binaries at the Palomar Testbed Interferometer
نویسنده
چکیده
We have used the Palomar Testbed Interferometer to perform very high precision differential astrometry on the 0.25 arcsecond separation binary star HD 171779. In 70 minutes of observation we achieve a measurement uncertainty of ≈ 9 micro-arcseconds in one axis, consistent with theoretical expectations. Nightto-night repeatability over four nights is at the level of 16 micro-arcseconds. This method of very-narrow-angle astrometry may be extremely useful for searching for planets with masses as small as 0.5 MJup around a previously neglected class of stars – so-called “speckle binaries.” It will also provide measurements of stellar parameters such as masses and distances, useful for constraining stellar models at the 10 level. The Palomar Testbed Interferometer
The Palomar Testbed Interferometer (PTI) is a long-baseline infrared interferometer located at Palomar Observatory, California. It was built as a testbed for interferometric techniques applicable to the Keck Interferometer. First fringes were obtained in July 1995. PTI implements a dual-star architecture, tracking two stars simultaneously for phase referencing and narrow-angle astrometry. The t...
متن کاملResults of the Guide-2 telescope testbed for the SIM Light Astrometric Observatory
The SIM Lite Astrometric Observatory is to perform narrow angle astrometry to search for Earth-like planets, and global astrometry for a broad astrophysics program, for example, mapping the distribution of dark matter in the Galaxy. The new SIM Lite consists of two Michelson interferometers and one star tracking telescope. The main six-meter baseline science interferometer observes a target sta...
متن کاملThe visual orbits of the spectroscopic binaries HD 6118 and HD 27483 from the Palomar Testbed Interferometer
We present optical interferometric observations of two double-lined spectroscopic binaries, HD 6118 and HD 27483, taken with the Palomar Testbed Interferometer (PTI) in the K band. HD 6118 is one of the most eccentric spectroscopic binaries and HD 27483 a spectroscopic binary in the Hyades open cluster. The data collected with PTI in 2002-2003 allow us to determine astrometric orbits and when c...
متن کاملASEPS-O Testbed Interferometer
The ASEPS-O Testbed Interferometer is a long-baseline infrared interferometer optimized for high-accuracy narrow-angle astrometry. It is being constructed by JPL for NASA as a testbed for the future Keck Interferometer to demonstrate the technology for the astrometric detection of exoplanets from the ground. Recent theoretical and experimental work has shown that extremely high accuracy narrow-...
متن کاملSub-Microarcsecond Astrometry with SIM-Lite: A Testbed-based Performance Assessment
SIM-Lite is an astrometric interferometer being designed for sub-microarcsecond astrometry, with a wide range of applications from searches for Earth-analogs to determining the distribution of dark matter. SIM-Lite measurements can be limited by random and systematic errors, as well as astrophysical noise. In this paper we focus on instrument systematic errors and report results from SIM-Lite’s...
